Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the deposit non-refundable?

The 50% deposit secures your booking and ensures that I reserve the date exclusively for you. Since I take on a limited number of projects, once your session is booked, I turn down other inquiries for that date. The deposit also covers time spent on pre-session planning, consultations, and preparation, ensuring a seamless experience from start to finish.

If you need to reschedule, the deposit can be transferred to a new date, subject to availability. Full details on cancellations and rescheduling will be outlined in your contract.

Booking & Availability

Where are you based, and do you travel?

I’m based in The Cotswolds, England, but I’m always open to travelling—whether it’s a project nearby or across the globe. For locations beyond 10 miles from my base, a travel fee applies, calculated based on distance and logistics. That said, I always strive to keep travel costs as fair and efficient as possible.

Of course, if you’d prefer to arrange business class travel, who am I to refuse?

Have a destination in mind? Reach out via my contact page to book a destination session.

How far in advance should I book?

I recommend booking as early as possible to secure your preferred date, especially for seasonal sessions, commercial projects, or travel-based shoots, which can fill up months in advance.

That said, being a little neuro-spicy, I thrive on last-minute challenges and love the energy of a fast-moving project. So if you need a short-notice booking, don’t hesitate to reach out—I’ll always do my best to accommodate.

Send me a message via my Contact page, and let’s chat about availability.

What happens if I need to reschedule or cancel?

I understand that plans can change, and I aim to be as flexible as possible. If you need to reschedule, your deposit can be transferred to a new date, subject to availability. The sooner you let me know, the better I can accommodate your request.

If you need to cancel completely, the 50% deposit is non-refundable, as it secures your booking and covers the time spent on preparation. Full details on cancellations, rescheduling, and any exceptions will be outlined in your contract.

If you’re unsure about your availability, reach out via my Contact page, and we can discuss options.

Do you offer last-minute bookings?

Yes! While I recommend booking in advance to secure your ideal date, I love a last-minute challenge and will always do my best to accommodate short-notice bookings. Availability depends on my current schedule, but if you have a project that needs a quick turnaround, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Send me a message via my Contact page, and let’s discuss the details.

Do you require a deposit to secure my booking?

Yes, a 50% non-refundable deposit is required to secure your booking. This ensures that your date is reserved exclusively for you and covers the time spent on pre-session planning and preparation.

The remaining balance is due before the final delivery of your images. If needed, I offer flexible payment plans, allowing you to split the remaining balance into instalments leading up to delivery.

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes. After the 50% non-refundable deposit is paid to secure your booking, the remaining balance can be split into instalments leading up to the final delivery of your images. This allows you to spread the cost while ensuring a smooth and flexible process.

If you’d like a customised payment plan, let me know—I’m happy to offer options that work best for you.

Style & Approach

How would you describe your photography style?

My photography is intuitive, candid, and emotive, with a strong focus on light, texture, and the quiet moments in between. I embrace a minimalist and analog-inspired aesthetic, favouring natural light and an understated approach that feels organic and timeless.

Rather than staging or overly directing, I work with a fluid, observational process, allowing moments to unfold naturally. Whether capturing people, places, or objects, my goal is to create images that feel honest, immersive, and deeply considered.

To learn more about my approach, visit my Approach page, or browse my Portfolio to see my work in action.

Do you direct poses or take a more candid approach?

My approach is mostly candid and intuitive, focusing on natural moments rather than rigid posing. I aim to create a relaxed environment where you can feel comfortable and present, allowing authentic expressions and movements to unfold organically.

That said, I offer gentle direction when needed—subtle guidance on positioning, movement, or how to interact with the space—ensuring you feel at ease while still achieving beautifully composed images.

Do you shoot with film or digital?

I primarily shoot digital, with my editing aesthetic heavily inspired by the timeless look of film. My Nikon D850, paired with Sigma Art prime lenses, allows me to achieve a rich, organic feel while maintaining the flexibility and efficiency of digital photography.

I do offer film photography as a premium add-on for those who want the unique depth and texture of 35mm or medium format film. I keep a selection of premium and vintage film stock, but if you have a preferred film type in mind, let me know, and I’ll do my best to source it.

To see examples of both formats, visit my Portfolio, or learn more about my process on the Approach page. If you’d like to add film to your session, send me a message via my Contact page, and we can discuss the details.

How do you choose locations for shoots?

I shoot on location, usually near the client or in surrounding areas that best complement the vision for the session. My focus is on selecting natural, minimal, or atmospheric spaces that enhance the mood without feeling overly staged. Whether it’s an outdoor landscape, a thoughtfully designed interior, or an urban setting, I look for locations with beautiful light, interesting textures, and a sense of presence.

If you have a specific location in mind, I’m always open to ideas. Otherwise, I can suggest options based on the aesthetic and feel you’re looking for. For brand or commercial shoots, I also consider how the space aligns with your identity and visual narrative.

What type of equipment do you use?

For digital photography, I shoot with a professional full-frame Nikon D850, with a Nikon D810 as my backup, paired with Sigma Art prime lenses for exceptional sharpness and quality.

For film photography, I use a Nikon F4s (35mm) with the same Sigma lenses, and for medium format, I work with a Mamiya RB67 Pro, delivering rich, detailed images with a timeless feel.

I also occasionally use a Polaroid OneStep+ for behind-the-scenes moments and creative experimentation. My latest favourite addition? A smoke/haze machine—perfect for adding atmosphere and depth to certain concepts.

The Shoot

How long do sessions typically last?

The duration of a session is entirely shaped by your needs and the scope of the project. Shoots can range from 30 minutes to 7 hours or more, depending on what we’re capturing.

Rather than working to a rigid timeframe, sessions are planned with a maximum agreed duration, providing the flexibility needed to capture everything effectively while maintaining efficiency. That said, I work intuitively and efficiently, so there are times when the required images come together sooner than expected.

What should I do to prepare for my session?

Preparation depends on the type of session, but a little planning always helps ensure the best results. Here are some key considerations:

For Portrait Sessions

• Choose clothing that feels comfortable and reflects your personal style. Neutral tones and textured fabrics often work well.

• Consider locations that hold meaning or complement the aesthetic you’re looking for.

• If needed, think about hair and grooming in advance, but keep things natural to maintain authenticity.

For Brand & Commercial Shoots

• Define the key visuals and messaging you’d like to convey.

• Prepare any necessary products, props, or styling elements in advance.

• Ensure locations are set up and ready for the shoot, with good natural light where possible.

• If a team is involved, brief everyone on the creative direction to ensure a smooth process.

For Travel & Accommodation Photography

• Coordinate access and scheduling in advance to capture the best lighting conditions.

• Ensure rooms, spaces, or key locations are styled and ready for photography.

• If needed, provide a shot list or priority areas to focus on.

Every session is unique, so I’ll guide you through any specific preparations based on your project. If you have questions or need recommendations, send me a message via my Contact page, and we can go over the details together.

What if the weather is bad on the day of an outdoor shoot?

Weather is always a factor with outdoor shoots, but I take a flexible and adaptive approach to ensure we still get the best results.

If the forecast looks unreliable, we have a few options:

Proceed as planned – Sometimes, overcast skies or light rain can add atmosphere and depth to a shoot.

Reschedule – If the conditions are too extreme, we can arrange a new date, subject to availability.

Adapt the shoot – We can adjust the location, seek sheltered areas, or incorporate the weather into the aesthetic if it aligns with your vision.

I always keep a close eye on forecasts leading up to the shoot and will be in touch if any changes need to be discussed. If you’re concerned about weather conditions, send me a message via my Contact page, and we can plan accordingly.

Can I bring props or personal items to include in the shoot?

The difference in pricing comes down to image usage and licensing. For brands, I provide commercial use and print licenses, allowing them to use the images for marketing, advertising, and promotional materials without legal restrictions. Individuals typically don’t require these licenses, so their pricing reflects more personal usage.

By tailoring pricing to each client’s needs, I ensure that both individuals and businesses receive the right services and usage rights for their specific projects.

Not sure which pricing applies to you? Get in touch, and I’ll be happy to guide you.

Can I bring someone with me to the shoot?

Yes, of course. Clients are welcome to bring a friend, partner, or family member for support. A familiar face can help you feel more comfortable and at ease during the session.

That said, unless they are part of the shoot, I kindly ask that young children not be present. They can be a distraction, pose safety concerns depending on the location, and may take focus away from the session itself.

If you’d like to bring someone along, just let me know in advance so we can plan accordingly.

If you have any questions, send me a message via my Contact page.

Editing & Delivery

How long does it take to receive my final images?

The turnaround time for final images is usually agreed upon during the planning stages, but in most cases, they are delivered within two weeks of the session.

If you need your images sooner, I offer an expedited delivery option, with final images delivered within 3–5 days as a paid add-on. Let me know in advance if you require a faster turnaround, and I’ll do my best to accommodate.

For more details on the full process, visit my Experience page or send me a message via my Contact page to discuss specific deadlines.

Do I get to choose which images are edited?

Yes. After the shoot, I carefully transfer, back up, and cull the raw images, selecting the strongest shots before any editing takes place. These are then uploaded as unedited proofs to a secure online proof gallery, where you can review and select your favourites for editing.

Often, I provide more images than the agreed quantity, giving you a wider selection to choose from. Once editing is complete, the final images are uploaded to your gallery for review. During the selection and checkout process, you’ll have the option to purchase additional images beyond what’s included in your package

For more details on the full process, visit my Experience page or send me a message via my Contact page.

Will all images be edited and retouched?

Only the images you select from the proof gallery will be edited and retouched. I focus on refining light, tone, and texture while maintaining a natural, authentic feel. Any additional images purchased during the selection and checkout process will also be fully edited before delivery.

What file formats will my images be delivered in?

Final images are delivered as high-resolution JPEGs (300dpi), carefully optimised for print. Clients can also download lower-resolution versions, ideal for web use and social media. This ensures you have the right format for every purpose, without compromising quality.

RAW files are not included as standard. My photography is more than just capturing an image—it’s about the full creative process, from composition to final edit. My artistic touch is an integral part of my work, and the final images reflect that.

However, for commercial and brand clients, I offer the option to purchase RAW files at an additional cost. If this is something you require, let me know during the booking process.

For more details, visit my Approach page or send me a message via my Contact page to discuss your needs.

Do you offer expedited delivery if I need my images quickly?

Yes. Standard turnaround for final images is typically within two weeks, but if you need them sooner, I offer an expedited delivery option as a paid add-on. With this, your fully edited images will be delivered within 3–5 days of the session, depending on the project scope.

If you have a tight deadline, let me know as early as possible so I can prioritise your edit.

Usage, Prints & Licensing

Can I print the images myself?

Yes, but to print the images yourself, you’ll need to purchase a print license, which grants you the rights to reproduce the images independently. This ensures the final prints meet professional quality standards and maintain the integrity of my work.

For a seamless experience, I offer gallery-quality prints and wall art, which can be ordered directly from your secure online gallery. A range of premium print products is available, including framed prints, fine art prints, canvases, and large-format pieces. All prints are produced using archival-quality photographic papers and finishes, designed for longevity and rich, detailed tones.

If you’re unsure which option is best for you or would like guidance on print selections, visit your online gallery or send me a message via my Contact page, and I’d be happy to assist.

Do you offer print products or albums?

Yes. I offer a carefully curated selection of gallery-quality prints, framed artwork, and bespoke albums, allowing you to preserve your images in a tangible, lasting form.

All prints and albums are produced using premium archival materials, ensuring exceptional colour, texture, and longevity. Options include:

Can I order prints or albums through you?

Yes. Once your final images are delivered, you can order prints, framed artwork, and bespoke albums directly through your secure online gallery. A variety of sizes, finishes, and premium materials are available to ensure the highest quality.

For guidance on options, send me a message via my Contact page.

How long will my online gallery be available?

Your private online gallery will remain available for one month from the date of final image delivery. During this time, you can download your images, share the gallery, and place any print or album orders.

If you need extended access, I offer gallery extensions as a paid add-on. For long-term storage, you can also opt for a mobile gallery app, which provides lifetime access to your images.

Can I use the images for commercial purposes?

For brands and businesses, a commercial license is required to use images for marketing, advertising, or any revenue-generating purposes. Licensing terms vary depending on usage, so we’ll discuss this during the booking process to ensure you have the right permissions for your needs.

For individual clients, images are licensed for personal use only, meaning they can’t be used for commercial purposes without prior agreement.

If you need commercial usage rights or have specific licensing requirements, send me a message via my Contact page, and we can discuss the details.

Do you retain the copyright to the images?

Yes. As the photographer, I retain full copyright to all images I create. This is standard practice and ensures that my work is protected while allowing clients to use their images under the agreed license.

For individual clients, images are provided with a personal use license, meaning they can be shared, printed, and enjoyed but not used for commercial purposes.

For brands and businesses, a commercial license is required for marketing, advertising, or any revenue-generating use. If you need extended usage rights or have specific licensing requirements, I’m happy to discuss options.

Can I share my photographs on social media?

Absolutely! I encourage you to share your photographs and showcase our collaboration. All I ask is that you credit me as the photographer and tag @danmackenzie when posting.

Your support means a lot, and proper credit ensures that my work reaches more people who appreciate authentic, considered imagery. Thank you for sharing the love!
